What are you working on at the moment?
I’m working on a contemporary thriller set in Tokyo, as well as various short stories and translation projects.
What are your writing aspirations?
I’d like to keep writing, and keep learning for as long as I live.
What do you love about working at the Writers’ Cafe?
I love the support, practical advice and all the kicks up the backside I’ve received from this amazing community.
What’s your best piece of writing advice?
It’s okay for a first draft to be terrible. A terrible first draft is something you can work with; a blank page is not. Most of the writing is in the editing.
Which authors do you admire?
All of them, for putting themselves out there, and in particular, the writers of the Writers Café I’ve come to know on a personal level. Also, in no particular order, Kaori Ekuni, Elizabeth Gilbert, Marian Keyes, Anna Burns, Junichiro Tanizaki, Alexander McCall Smith, Sayaka Murata, Zadie Smith, Willy Vlautin, Raymond Carver, Stephanie Johnson, Patricia Grace, Jhumpa Lahiri, Kate Duignan, Eleanor Catton, Liane Moriarty, JK Rowling, Elena Ferrante, and don’t even get me started on the classics: basically, I really love to read.
